A series of employment law changes that will greatly enhance protections for workers and requirements for employers has taken effect in the beginning of April.

The new provisions include an increase in the National Minimum Wage (with the main rate being £12.71/hr for 21+).

An additional Fair Work Agency was established to assist in the enforcement of the National Minimum Wage, SSP, and subsequently holiday pay; these agencies' ability to collect on behalf of workers will create an increased pressure on employers to comply with these new laws.

All employers need to urgently review their payroll, leave and whistleblowing policies, update record-keeping and parental leave policies, and develop plans for complying with the new standards.
