A huge outcry over P&O's

Although there is a huge outcry over P&O's decision to sack nearly 800 staff members, they were legally in the clear.

P&O claims it did not commit any criminal offence because it notified 'the competent authority of the state where the vessel is registered' (Bermuda, Bahamas, Cyprus), rather than the UK government.

It's easier to fire employees in the UK than in Europe by using an "efficient breach", which is a cost-saving way of addressing an ongoing financial loss.
