
A senior judge in the UK has issued a very clear warning to the legal profession stating that citing fake and AI-generated legal cases in court could lead to criminal charges.
This was announced after two recent incidents in London's High Court. The lawyers submitted arguments containing case law that does not exist. The lawyers were both suspected of relying on AI tools to generate supporting materials without verification.
Lady Justice Victoria Sharp explained the issue as a threat to the integrity of the justice system. Going on to say that it could undermine public confidence in the legal proceedings if left unchecked.
Legal tech is becoming more advanced and widely adopted and this is a reminder that technology must be used with care, context and professional oversight.
