Swift and fair justice denied by record court backlogs

Latest criminal court figures show the backlog in both the Crown Court and magistrates’ courts has hit exceptional levels, leaving victims, witnesses and defendants waiting years for their cases to be heard, with some listings not scheduled until 2030. The data highlights deep‑seated issues including chronic under‑resourcing, limited court sitting days, staff shortages and deteriorating infrastructure that are all contributing to these unacceptable delays.

Simply shifting cases from one part of the system to another won’t fix the problem. What’s needed is sustained investment and systemic reform to clear the backlog, restore confidence in the justice process and ensure access to timely justice for everyone.
