Employment Rights Bill

The UK’s Employment Rights Bill is set to give trade unions a bigger voice at work. It introduces a statutory right for unions to access workplaces, both in person and digitally, for recruitment, representation, and collective bargaining. Employers will have 20 working days to respond, with the Central Arbitration Committee able to enforce compliance — including through fines.

The Bill also expands paid time off and facilities for union officials, learning reps, and, for the first time, equality reps. Requests for time off will now be presumed reasonable, putting the onus on employers to justify any refusal.

Employers must also inform all workers of their right to join a union. By repealing certain past restrictions and strengthening collective bargaining, this Bill represents a major shift in workplace rights.
