A big shake-up is on the cards for the justice system in England and Wales. The government, led by David Lammy, wants to scrap jury trials in many criminal cases, shifting lower-level and “either-way” offences to judge-only hearings. Under the new proposals, only the most serious crimes (like murder or rape) would still get a jury.

The aim: to clear a massive backlog of around 78,000 court cases and make justice faster.

But there’s a huge downside: critics say this would chip away at a core democratic right, being judged by a jury of your peers, and weaken trust in the system. They warn that a judge-only system risks bias and removes public participation from decisions that affect lives.

If you care about justice, fairness and transparency, this change matters.
