As the issue of regulating artificial intelligence remains under consideration for the future by the Parliament, the Law Society has now offered evidence to the Joint Committee for Human Rights on what that consideration should mean.
The concerns raised by the panellists, lawyers, and other experts who attended the session included the definition of AI, how regulation can keep abreast with innovation, as well as how matters of transparency and accountability can be managed. These concerns tended to focus on decision-making, liability, and standards related to the entire lifecycle of AI.
The implications of this work are evident in that it draws attention towards the involvement of legal professionals in shaping AI policy in the UK and the significance of developing safeguards.
