As things stand, the first £325,000 of a person’s estate is tax-free, known as the “nil-rate band.”

If the estate includes a main home that’s passed on to children or grandchildren (so-called “direct descendants”), this threshold can rise to £500,000 (i.e. the nil-rate band plus the extra “residence nil-rate band”).

That means many estates may still pass to loved ones tax-free, but with rising property and asset values, more people are drifting above those limits. For families, business-owners or property-holders, this makes planning ahead more important than ever.
