UK judges to be given powers to dismiss oppressive Slapps lawsuits at early stage

The UK government has introduced a new law that will make it easier to dismiss "strategic lawsuits against public participation" (SLAPPs).

SLAPPs are lawsuits that are brought against journalists, writers, and campaigners in an attempt to silence them and deter them from reporting on matters of public interest.

The law also creates an early dismissal mechanism in the courts, which means that judges will be able to dismiss SLAPP cases at an early stage if they believe that the case does not have a reasonable chance of success:
