Tower of London - Ceremony of the Keys

I recently went on the night-time tour of Tower of London, something I’d never done before. The castle, bathed in night-time shadows, felt completely different from the daytime tourist crowds.

At the heart of the evening: the Ceremony of the Keys, a 700-year-old ritual that locks up the Tower each night. It’s simple and solemn: guards in traditional uniform carry a lantern, march through ancient stone, lock the gates, and sound a bugle. The atmosphere is quiet, eerie and deeply historic.

The whole thing hits differently when you’re there after dark. You’re surrounded by walls built almost a millennium ago. There are “murder holes,” a spooky “Bloody Tower,” and ghost stories galore, but the sense of being part of history is real. Our guide was a “Beefeater” (officially a Yeoman Warder), who told stories with grim detail and dark humour.

If you love London history, odd rituals, or anything slightly spooky, it’s well worth a read.
