Big changes ahead for sick pay in the UK, what employers & employees should know. From April 2026, SSP changes will mean that workers get sick pay from day one of sickness absence, rather than after the current three “waiting days.”

What’s more, the usual earnings threshold will be removed, so everyone, even lower-paid or part-time staff, will become eligible.

For employees, this is a welcome boost, giving financial support straight away when illness hits, and offering security even to those working few hours or earning less. For employers and recruiters, it’s a signal to review payroll and absence policies now, to make sure systems are ready and that staff know what changes are coming.
